Port of Beirut Revenues down by 3.52% in 2018

The Revenues at the Port of Beirut (POB) witnessed a decline of 3.52% during 2018 to reach $231.53M.

Total container activity including transshipment (TEU+TS) rose by a yearly rate of 0.06% to 1,305,754 Twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) by December 2018. In details, container activity excluding transshipment dropped by 2.62% in 2018 to 874,246 TEU, and transshipment activity alone rose by an annual 5.96% to 431,508 TEU by the end of 2018.

In turn, the volume of the merchandise passing through the port declined by a yearly 7.47 % to reach 7984.5 thousand tons in 2018. Following the same trend, the number of cars shipped to Lebanon decreased by 34.04% to reach 68,247 cars in 2018 compared to 103,467 in the same period last year.

In addition, the number of ships that docked at the Port of Beirut also dropped by 1.94 % to 1,872 ships in 2018.

MSC, one of the two major shipping lines functioning at the port observed a yearly decrease in transshipment volume of 24.79% to 157,293 TEU by December 2018. In contrary, CMA CGM observed a yearly rise of 32.55% in transshipment activity to 195,621 TEU during the same period.
