Lebanese Construction Activity Welcomed 2015 on a Negative Note

January 2015 revealed the lowest number of authorized construction permits since 2011. In fact, and according to figures released by the Orders of Engineers in Beirut and the North, construction permits stood at 972 permits in the first month of 2015 compared to 1,371 in January 2014.

Furthermore, the construction area authorized by permits (CAP) decreased by an annual 22.32% to reach 818,068 sqm. However, the average area per permit stood at 841.63 sqm per permit, up from 768.15 sqm per permit in January 2014. This could be reflecting that investors have become more oriented towards larger plots for their projects, as only large developers remain on the market.

In terms of regions, Mount Lebanon grasped 42.80% of total permits while South Lebanon and Nabatiye followed with respective shares of 17.70% and 13.58%.
