Number of Construction Permits Gained 0.48% y-o-y by Aug. 2017

According to the Orders of Engineers in Beirut and Tripoli, the number of construction permits rose by 0.48% year-on-year (y-o-y), to reach 11,343 permits by Aug. 2017. However, the Construction Area Authorized by Permits (CAP) slipped by an annual 10.81% to 7.07M square meters (sqm), which may be an indication of investors preferring smaller construction areas for their projects.

In a regional breakdown, the change in the number of permits reflected an improved construction activity only in Beirut and the North, while construction slowed down in all other governorates. In details, Mount Lebanon grasped the largest share of permits issued (35.54% of total permits), with 4,031 construction permits issued by Aug. 2017, down by an annual 1.78%. The South of Lebanon (grasping 17.49% of total), witnessed a yearly 5.43% decline in the number of construction permits which reached 1,984 allocated permits over the same period. In Nabatiyeh, 1,459 permits were issued by Aug. 2017 (12.86% of total issued permits), down 6.95% compared to the same period in 2016. However, in the North (20.72% of total permits), the number of construction permits climbed by 15.14% y-o-y to 2,350 permits. Also, in Beirut (4.45% of total), the number of construction permits rose by 12.22% to stand at 505 permits by Aug. 2017.
