Port of Beirut’s Revenues Down by 4.29% by April 2017

Activity at the Port of Beirut (PoB) plummeted in the first four months of 2017 as the port’s revenues recorded a yearly decrease of 4.29% to $74.25M.

Nonetheless, total container activity including transshipment (TEU+TS) grew by an annual 2.76% to 390, 426 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) by April 2017. In details, container activity excluding transshipment increased by 2.68% y-o-y to 271, 838 TEU, and transshipment activity alone rose by an annual 2.96% to 118, 588 TEU by April 2017.

MSC, one of the two major shipping/logistic firms operating at the port, witnessed a yearly rise in transshipment activity of 21.10% to 76, 296 TEU, while the transshipment activity of its competitor CMA CGM increased by 14.36% to 54, 104 TEU by April 2017.

Details of the port’s activity by April 2017 compared to the same period in 2016 were as follows:

The number of ships that docked at the PoB fell from 699 by April 2016 to 617 in the same period of 2017.

The total volume of imported and exported merchandise fell from 2,882 thousand tons in 2016 to   2,859 thousand tons in 2017.

The number of imported cars also registered an upturn from 35,050 cars by April 2016 to 39,884 cars by April 2017.
