Port of Beirut Revenues Down in the First Month of 2019

The revenues of the Port of Beirut (PoB) fell by 15.46% year-on-year (y-o-y) to stand at $17.76 M in January 2019, down from $ 21.01M in January 2018.

In details and over the same period, total container activity including transshipment (TEU+TS) fell by 14.78% y-o-y to stand at 90,981 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU).  In details, container activity excluding transshipment dropped by 13.54% to reach 59,473 TEU in January 2019 and following the same trend, transshipment activity also fell over the same period by 17.02% to 31,508 TEU in the first month of 2019.

The transshipment volumes of the two main shipping lines operating on the port fell significantly with that of MSC down by an annual 28.71% to 11,972 TEU and that of CMA CGM down by 23.31% to 12,425 TEU.

In addition, the total volume of imported and exported merchandise declined by an annual 9.01% to 581.4 tons and the number of imported cars also slid by a yearly 35.98% to 4,069. Also, the number of ships docking at PoB fell from 153 in January 2018 to 129 in January 2019.
