Port of Beirut Revenues down by 13.42% y-o-y by May 2019

Figures released by the Port of Beirut (PoB) show that the port’s revenues fell by a yearly 13.42% to stand at $85.9M by May 2019. In details, total container activity including transshipment (TEU+TS) decreased by an annual 3.75% and totaled 504,682 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).The breakdown of container activity showed container activity excluding transshipment (TEU) dropped by 11.71% to reach 313,356 TEU. On the other hand, transshipment (TS) activity increased by 11.6% to 189,083 TEU by May 2019.

Local shipments by MSC were at 94,036 TEU, an 11.05% decrease from the previous year while their transshipment volume increased from 72,386 TEU to 100,438 TEU. Meanwhile, local shipments by CMA CGM reached 52,471 TEU, a 19.83% decrease compared to the same period last year, while their transshipment volume decreased from 72,324 TEU to 61,377 TEU.

During the first five months of 2019, the total volume of shipments amounted to 2.88M tons compared to 3.25M tons during the same period of 2018. This is highlighted by a decrease in the number of ships docked from 759 ships the previous year to 716 ships by May 2019.
