Port of Beirut’s Total container activity including transshipment down by 24% YOY in Q1 2020

According to the latest figures published by the Port of Beirut (PoB), the Port’s revenues fell by 30.33% year-on-year (YOY) to $12.37M in the first month of the year.

In details, Total container activity including transshipment (TEU+TS) contracted by 24% YOY to 222,573 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) as Container activity (TEU) excluding transshipment, fell by an annual 44.71% to 101,891 TEU in Q1 2020. Meanwhile, Transshipment activity (TS) alone added a yearly 11.14% to 120,682 TEU in the first 3 month of 2020.

Accordingly, the transshipment volume of CMA CGM, one of the two major shipping lines operating at Beirut Port, increased by 13.21% totaling 35,646 TEU while the transshipment activity of MSC dropped from 58,321 TEU in Q1 2019 to 55,096 TEU in Q1 2020. Nonetheless, local volume of CMA CGM and MSC both fell by 24.17% and 44.72% to 19,093 and 30,11TEU, respectively, over the period.

In addition, the Total volume of imported and exported merchandise fell by an annual 35.89% to 728 tons by February. Worth noting that the number of Cars at PoB registered a significant drop by 70.94% totaling 2,476 cars by Feb. 2020.
