Revenues of Port of Beirut Almost Halved by May 2020 as Port Activity Dwindled

The latest statistics on activity at the Port of Beirut revealed an annual slump of 46.7% in the revenues of the Port of Beirut (PoB) to $45.8M by May 2020.  

In detail, Total container activity including transshipment (TEU+TS) fell by a yearly 28.7% to stand at 359,805 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), with Container activity (TEU) alone declining by 44% year-on-year (YOY) to 175,451 TEU by May 2020. In its turn, Transshipment activity (TS) slipped by 3.6% YOY to 184,354 TEU over the same period.

Accordingly, the transshipment volume of CMA CGM, one of the two major shipping lines operating at the Port of Beirut, fell by 1.93% YOY to 60,190 TEU. Similarly, the transshipment activity of MSC decreased by 20% YOY to 80,357 TEU by May 2020. In addition, the local volumes of CMA CGM and MSC also fell by 36.5% and 49.4% to 33,305 and 47,563 TEU, respectively, by May 2020.
