$1 Billion in aid could pave the way for stability amid crisis in Lebanon

In a significant step toward supporting Lebanon amidst escalating humanitarian and security challenges, the international community pledged nearly $1 Billion at the October 2024 Paris conference. This aid package aims to address Lebanon’s immediate needs while reinforcing its security infrastructure during a time of profound national hardship.

Coordinated by Lebanon’s caretaker Minister of the Environment, Dr. Nasser Yassin, the conference outlined contributors to support both humanitarian and security sectors. Out of the total approximately $775 million is allocated to humanitarian aid, while $204 million is designated for the Lebanese Armed Forces and other security services. To date, $108 million has reached NGOs working on site, avoiding government agencies to guarantee transparency.

The Lebanese government alongside Imran Riza, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, is working to launch a digital platform that will monitor the distribution of aid. This platform seeks to address international issues about corruption and ensure transparency, and that aid immediately reaches Lebanon’s most affected populations. Because, the real challenge lies not just in securing the funds, but in making sure that they are efficiently distributed and used to ease suffering in the community..

With over 3,000 casualties and 1.2 million people displaced, which is the equivalent of more than 20% of the country’s total population, due to ongoing conflict, Lebanon is in urgent need of assistance. The newly pledged funds are vital for ensuring basic services, healthcare, and food security for marginalized communities across the country. This aid also provides critical backup for Lebanon’s security forces as they navigate a challenging geopolitical environment.
