Lebanese Commercial Banks Assets Down by 1.81% YoY to $100.5B in August 2026
According to Lebanon’s consolidated commercial banks’ balance sheet, total assets declined by 1.81% on year over year (YoY) basis to stand at $100.5B in August 2026.
On the assets side, currency and deposits with Central Bank represented a high figure of 74.82% of total assets; they dropped annually by 4.74% to settle at $75.20B in August 2026. Deposits with the central bank (BDL) represented 99.92% of total reserves, and decreased by 4.73% YoY, to reach $75.14B in August 2026. Furthermore, vault cash in Lebanese pound decreased by 18.62% on a yearly basis to stand at $62.07M by the same period.
Claims on resident customers, constituting 4.03% of total assets, shrank by 7.83% YoY to stand at $4.05B in August 2026. Moreover, resident securities portfolio, representing 4.71% of total assets, decreased by 5.45% in August 2026 to stand at $4.73B. More specifically, the Eurobond holding recorded a decrease of 1.33%, to reach $2.16B (net of provisions) in August 2026. Additionally, claims on non-resident financial sector rose by 17.11% YoY to stand at $6.02B in August 2026.
On the liabilities side, resident customers’ deposits were the main account, representing 63.05% of total liabilities; they dropped by 4.42% since August 2025 to reach $63.37B by the month of August 2026. In more details, deposits in foreign currencies (being 98.62% of resident customers’ deposits) declined by 4.56% YoY to reach $62.50B by August 2026, additionally deposits in LBP (1.38% of resident customers’ deposits) increased by 6.90% YoY to stand at $875.11M by August 2026.
As for non-resident customers’ deposits, grasping 21.19% of total liabilities, they recorded a drop of 0.40% and stood at $21.3B in August 2026. In details, the deposits in LBP dropped by 4.42% to reach $43.17M while deposits in foreign currencies decreased by 0.40% to reach $21.25B over the same period. In addition, non-resident financial sector liabilities representing 2.25% of total liabilities decreased by 5.54% YoY to reach $2.26B in August 2026.
Lastly, the capital accounts stood at $5.52B, higher by 22.12% than August 2025, noting that only about 10% of those are in LBP.
