Lebanon’s Maritime Trade Activity Down by the Second Month Of 2019

Figures released by the Port of Beirut (PoB) show that the Port’s revenues fell by 14.96% year-on-year (y-o-y) to stand at $33.89M by february 2019, down from $39.85M by feb 2018.

In details and over the same period, total container activity including transshipment (TEU+TS) fell by 7.33% y-o-y to stand at 196,977 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU).  In details, container activity excluding transshipment (TEU) dropped by 11.12% to reach 122,073 TEU by February 2019 and transshipment activity (TS) also fell over the same period by 3.40% to 72,661 TEU by the second month of 2019 .

The transshipment volume of CMA CGM, one of the two major shipping lines operating at the port fell by an annual 18.36% to reach 23,730 TEU , while the transshipment activity of MSC rose by 7.88% to 37,424 TEU by the second month of 2019.

In addition, the total volume of imported and exported merchandise declined by an annual 16.54% to 1135.5 tons and the number of imported cars also slid by a yearly 26.75% to 9,286. The number of ships docking at PoB fell from 311 by February 2018 to 264 by February 2019.
