Port of Beirut: Container Activity Down 7.44% by November 2024 to 700,974 TEU

Total cumulative container activity at the Port of Beirut dropped by 7.44% annually to 700,974 TEU by November 2024, amid the escalation of the Israeli-Hezbollah war in Lebanon. Transshipment activity, which involves cargo transferred from one ship to another at an intermediate port, decreased by 26.84% to 186,633 TEU during the same period due to higher insurance and shipping premiums and safety concerns, leading to the redirection of some cargo to other ports. Meanwhile, container activity, referring to cargo loaded onto or unloaded from ships at the port, saw a slight increase of 2.41% to 514,341 TEU, indicating that the sum of local demand and supply for goods remained relatively stable.
