2023 Recorded Attractive Tourism Activity

Number of Tourists in 2023 witnessed a fair increase compared to 2022 despite the Gaza war and security issues on the Southern border of Lebanon that was initiated in the last quarter of the year, but remained less than 2019.

According to the data by the Ministry of Tourism, the number of incoming visitors witnessed an annual increase of 13.68% reaching 1,666,492 visitors by December 2023, compared to 1,465,954 by December 2022, 889,953 by December 2021, and down from 1,936,320 visitors by December 2019.

The breakdown of statistics by the Ministry of Tourism reveals that the number of tourists from the top 4 destinations recorded considerable upticks. In detail, Europeans grasped the lion’s share of 40.77% of total tourists. Travelers from the Arab countries came in second, grasping a share of 25.78% of the total while tourists from the Americas and Asia constituted 20.39%, and 4.94% of total tourists respectively.

In more details, the number of European tourists rose by 16.29% year-on-year (YOY) to 679,389 by December 2023. Meanwhile the number of tourists from the Arab countries increased by 8.66% YOY to reach 429,640. Lastly, tourists from the American continent grew by 10.96% YOY to reach 339,731 visitors by December 2023.

The tourism sector in Lebanon witnessed moderate improvements in tourist arrivals in 2023 amid the resumption of normal activity and the easing of pandemic restrictions in Lebanon. However, it is still less than the number of visitors of 2018 and 2019 of 1,963,917 and 1,936,320 respectively.
