Port of Beirut: Container Activity up 11.31% by March 2023

Total container activity including transshipment (TEU+TS) increased by a yearly 11.31% to stand at 180,414 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) for the month of March 2023, with transshipment activity (TS) adding 69.35% YOY to 53,290 TEU, while container activity (TEU) dropped by 2.67% on a yearly basis to 127,124 TEU by March 2023.

On a monthly basis, total container activity added 10.79% to stand at 64,107 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), while container activity (TEU) dropped by 1.41% for the month of March 2023 compared to same month last year to reach 45,708 TEU. Meanwhile, transshipment activity (TS) grew by 59.93% to 18,397 TEU for the month of March 2023, compared to 11,503 TEU in March 2022.

In more details, the transshipment volume of CMA CGM, one of the two major shipping lines operating at the Port of Beirut, increased annually by 71.01% to stand at 41,027 TEU by March 2023. In contrast, transshipment volume of MSC, the other major line, dropped by 31.61% YOY to 2,826 TEU by the same month. Furthermore, the local volume of CMA CGM rose slightly by 4.76% to reach 38,426 TEU; meanwhile, local volume of MSC fell by 19.10% to stand at 28,537 TEU by the month of March 2023.
